What does "dressing in layers" mean?

Dressing in layers means using several different layers of clothing, according to the weather. In colder times, at least three layers are important: the base layer, the mid layer and the protective cover layer.

You can adjust the base and mid layers according to the weather conditions and your kid's activity. The cover layer should be sufficiently loose, as the warmth of the entire outfit is based on air trapped between the layers. Different materials and accessories are also very important in regulating warmth. Read more about dressing in layers here.
